Good morning, Ryan!
It's 0400 in the morning and it's time to celebrate your birthday! Aren't you super excited?
It's Ryan's birthday, and kind of a big birthday. To celebrate, we arranged for a fishing charter for bottom-dwelling fish for us and some friends. Our captain and assistant met us at Onna port for a day of fishing. With any luck, we would catch snapper and grouper and have a fabulous birthday dinner to go with the productive fishing charter.
The morning started off bright and cheery as we made our way just south of Ie-jima in the East China Sea. The weather behind us, to the east and headed our way, was anything but cheery, and it soon made us all more than a little bit wet.
None of us complained much about the rain, because the alternative in September is blistering heat and humidity without a breeze. We were quite happy not to be hot and miserable. Wet and catching lots of fish made for a great day. Here's some of our happy crew:
Two people were lucky enough to reel in some very large mibai, and one of them was the Ryan. This beautiful grouper would be even more beautiful in our bellies this weekend. As impressive as this fish was, it was not quite the largest fish caught, although fairly close.
One of our crew, Nii Adjei, asked our captain if any of the fish would be good for sashimi. Our captain, Captain Toma, was the best captain we've had the privilege of spending time with. He was very attentive to all of us, ensuring our hooks were always baited and that everyone had the opportunity to catch a fish. He was all smiles and seemed to have as much fun watching us as we did catching fish. In this same spirit, he selected a couple of fish and sliced them up for sashimi. You can not get much more fresh than this! He even had wasabi paste and soy sauce.
I think everyone had a great day on the water, fishing, eating, and enjoying each other's company. My favorite moment of the day was seeing this guy land his big grouper.
