Meet Yamaneko.
Yamaneko has had many owners in her four years of life. What we know of this history of owners is that she was turned into one of the animal adoption programs on Okinawa and was adopted by a series of officers within the battalion until coming to stay with us. Apparently, it is a common occurrence for families to adopt a young puppy or kitten while they are here and then not have the funds to take the pet with them to the states. It is expensive, but often civilians or service members will not have budgeted appropriately when PCS season rolls around, or they have more pets than are permitted when it is time to move.
We were happy to help out a friend who did not want to give up Yamaneko but who already had two pets and had acquired her after helping out an officer who did not make arrangements to PCS with her pet. Ryan was especially excited because he always liked Yamaneko when we visited the family who had her. She is very soft and was friendly, although a little skittish. Since living with us, it seems she is more comfortable with females than males, and will only sit near me. Every now and then, when she is really tired, she will snuggle with Ryan until she regains her sense of awareness and corrects her mistakes. Those are special moments.
