Our first weekend back in Okinawa offered perfect weather for just about anything. We took the opportunity to find a new snorkeling place. Usually the western coast of Okinawa offer the best reefs and ample fish. We wanted to see if we could find a good spot on the east cost, or the Pacific side. Our drive took us quite a ways north towards Cape Hedo, but a geocaching stop gave us a good overlook to a small bay that seemed promising. Ryan wanted to check it out, and I agree.
The swim across the bay was a lengthy one, and we hoped that it would all be worth it once we reached the break. We were not disappointed! There were plenty of fish, a decent amount of corals for pretty views, and lots of caves and nooks and crannies that Ryan likes to explore for big fish. I busied myself with having a look about while Ryan got his spearfishing on.
While taking pictures, I found a familiar face staring back at me.
Tough to pick out, but this is a grouper staring back at the camera. Look in the top left half of the photo, just above the small clump of coral. Most groupers are skittish: you see them and then they dart quickly into the rocks, never to appear again. This one "sat" on a rock ledge and stared back at me, for a while. I flagged Ryan and pointed the grouper out to him. Ryan gave me the "ok" sign and swam down to the target.
And it was that easy! This is not usually the case, but this grouper made a mistake. Part of me felt a little badly for the grouper. Maybe it was just curious? Maybe it had a quick getaway and never felt inclined to use it? Ryan didn't feel bad. He thought of it as raising the mean IQ of the grouper population because we got rid of the dullest of the bunch. Either way, we found a new snorkeling spot AND secured a fresh mibai dinner for us!
